What to watch out for when re-roof your home depends largely on what is on it already. If there is only one layer of shingles, and they do not fall apart and not wrinkled badly, then it is ok to walk over them. Be aware that on an older roof as yours, you will not have the new rubber membrane commonly referred to as ice and water shield, which will be installed if you should have it removed. If your Calgary roofing is a simple hip or gable without a lot of ice traps and if you currently have any leaks, then I would say it is ok to just go over it.

However, if you have two layers of shingles on the roof already, when you need to have it stripped. The reason for this is twofold. The nails just do not hold enough through all the previous layers and the other is the weight factor. Adding a third layer would be too much weight for the roof to keep structurally.

As I previously mentioned ice and water shield is the code in many jurisdictions and even if there is code in your make sure the roofing contractor installs it in all the valleys and along the gutter edge. Ice and water shield is a rubber membrane 3 'wide and in rolls of about 50'. It has adhesive on one side to stick to the roof shingles are then placed over it. You do not turn over the entire roof, because rubber does not breathe and the roof needs to breathe.

While working on your roof, it is a good time to ensure you have adequate attic ventilation. Another option is the core or the back hold. This is a membrane that is installed at the top ridge of your roofing Calgary and roof shingles. Remember that the entire vent at the top of your roof is useless unless you have enough vents in the Eve so that air to enter the attic. If you added insulation to your attic, you may inadvertently block the airflow.
